The building was designed in 1861 by George Corson for William Ledgard. George Corson designed many significant buildings in Leeds city centre including The Central Library, School Board, The Grand Theatre and a wing of the Leeds General Infirmary. All these buildinga share the very distinctive Romanesque style with red brick, detailed arched window surrounds and turrets. This combination was the height of fashion in the Victorian era. Believe it or not, No1 King Street was originally designed as a textile warehouse.
